Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines business as “a purposeful activity; a usually commercial or mercantile activity engaged in as a means of livelihood”. Based on this definition, most of us currently participate in business or have goals to one day occupy a contributing role in the business world. From the Chief Financial Officer to the clerk in accounting, each role is vital to the success of any given business.
Once upon a time, business was comprised of simple economics that placed workers in a few generic roles such as making something, selling something, or providing a service. Today’s business world expands beyond these traditional roles and creates niches such as marketing, human resources, and organizational development. Simply said, today’s business has something for everyone. Today it is not enough to create a product, put it on a shelf and sell it for a fair price. The business of today is complex with many moving parts and people. For a business to survive today, attention must be given to every need and detail from employee benefits and morale to effective product placement.
Are you currently examining your role in today’s business and defining your personal path to success in the business world? Perhaps you are on the road to that executive title but realize that you first need to return to academic life and earn that MBA. Maybe you seek specific skills that will allow you to add value to your organization in your current position. There are many academic programs available to full time and working students both in the classroom and online. There are business programs designed for both a general business education as well as one that is specialized in the area of finance, marketing, or technology.
