Geographic information systems (GIS) are high-powered computer hardware and software systems which are used for the collection, storage, retrieval and analysis and presentation of geographic data.
You need special skills to work in this area and a college course will give you those. Subjects may vary from course to course but you will study topics such as computer and topographical drafting, surveying, information systems, and the associated math.
Successful completion of a degree program will enable you to compete for jobs not only in fields such as environmental management and land use planning but also in related business management.
